Entry Level Referee Information
Why start with Grade 9? Most referees will begin their referee career working In-house and Travel games for younger age groups that are classified recreation or recreation plus. The Grade 9 badge qualifies those referees for those games, requires fewer hours in the classroom, and is $10.00 less expensive than the Grade 8 certification. PA West Soccer Youth Division Playing Rules also require a referee to be two (2) years older than the age group playing the match he or she will be officiating and the Grade 9 certification is good up to age U14 in the recreation, recreation plus and transitional levels of play, so this certification makes perfect sense for younger (ages 12-14) referees because they can’t work games played by older players that require a Grade 8 badge.

Referees 16 years of age and older can certify two ways; the referee can take the Grade 9 course ($45.00 - 12 hours) and then take the Bridge course ($10.00 - 9 hours) to attain a Grade 8 certification or take the Grade 8 course (cost is $50.00 - 21 hours). A referee younger than 16, but with two (2) years experience as a Grade 9 referee may take the Bridge course to certify as a Grade 8 referee once they’ve re-certified as Grade 9.

The Grade 9 course certifies referees to work recreation, recreation plus and transitional games (In-house and Travel Divisions 2, 3, 4, B, and C). The Grade 8 course certifies referees to work all levels of competition within PA West Soccer.

If you are interested in becoming certified as a referee please contact our Referee Coordinator.

Pre-game/Post-game Procedures for Teams and Referees - A procedure has been defined by the PA West Soccer Youth Board for team check-in and for post-game responsibilities. These procedures provide a standard set of guidelines for teams and referees to follow in order to facilitate a consistent pre-game and post-game at all levels of play and in all clubs. Click here to get them.

This Should Stop Referee Abuse for Awhile - The October 2004 issue of Referee Magazine (published by the National Association of Sports Officials) contains a chilling story (p. 10) of a referee in a South African game who responded to a coach's criticism by shooting and killing the coach ... during the game! The July 24 match was being played between local rivals Young Tigers from Marcelle and the Mighty Eleven of Kenton-on-Sea. The referee had just issued a yellow card to a Young Tigers player. When the coach protested, the referee put away his yellow card, pulled out a handgun, and shot the coach.
